Introduction

Despite its numerous advantages, why do many individuals seem to overlook the potential of Linux and its distributions?

Could this be attributed to misconceptions surrounding its free and open-source nature, or the belief that it is difficult to use?

Linux is only free if your time has no value – Linus Torvalds, Founder of Linux.

The lone enterprise exclusively leveraging open source technology.

What makes Linux an operating system that suitable for users of all levels?

Below are some universally applicable opinions of mine, which we believe are pertinent. My primary reasons for favoring them are as follows:

  1. An Open-source operating system
  2. Privacy
  3. Fully customization
  4. High-end security
  5. Good Community Support
  6. Reduced Maintenance
  7. Breathing New Life into Older Computers
  8. Ideal choice for programmers
  9. Software updates
  10. Picking a distro from the bucket
  11. Linux: Ideal Choice for Servers
1. An open-source operating system

So, what is open-source?

Open source software refers to software that has its source code accessible to the public, allowing anyone to view, edit, and distribute it. This stands in contrast to proprietary software, which typically has closed source code controlled by a single entity or organization.

As a result, the majority of applications and software, roughly over 90 per cent, are freely available to the public.

Certainly! While many assume open-source applications are entirely free, that’s not always the case. The source code is free, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s without cost.

Suggestion: Suggest checking out our blog with dedicated lists to save money in your business, without spending a fortune on proprietary software. Interested? Click the highlighted text to read the blog.

2. Privacy

When compared to other proprietary operating systems, Linux stands out for its privacy features. With proprietary systems, there’s uncertainty about the data they might collect from our devices.

However, this isn’t a concern with Linux. Being fully open-source, anyone can inspect, modify, and identify any potential issues.

3. Fully customization

Linux allows users to fully customize the operating system to their specific needs, whether it be for personal use or for specific business applications. This enables users to work more efficiently and effectively.

4. High-end security

Windows is often vulnerable to malware attacks, making antivirus essential. Meanwhile i don’t glorify Linux is completely immune, but comparably safer and not the easy target as other OS.

Protect your system and save money on security measures.

Linux is known for its strong security features and is less susceptible to malware and other types of cyber threats as compared to other operating systems.

It doesn’t mean that it is not completely immune to viruses and there are still some targeted attacks on the Linux market. The chances are very less.

5. Good Community Support

Linux is support by a large community of developers and users, which makes it easier to find solutions to problems and stay up-to-date with the latest developments.

6. Reduced Maintenance

Linux operating system and the application software that runs flawlessly on any machine and updates are regularly and frequently, which reduces the need for maintenance.

7. Breathing New Life into Older Computers

As technology advances, costs and dependencies rise, but Linux stands apart. It seamlessly operates on older computers, breathing new life into them.

With Linux, there are numerous OS options tailored to your computer’s compatibility and your specific work needs. It’s a significant advantage of Linux.

8. Ideal choice for programmers

For programming or running a software company, Linux is the top choice. It’s preferred because it comes with default dependencies and backend applications. Even big tech companies like Google, Oracle, and Microsoft rely on Linux, despite having their own systems.

Plus, Linux’s bash scripting ability is a major reason why programmers love it.

9. Software updates

Updating software can be a hassle with other OS like Microsoft, but Linux offers a more user-friendly approach. While it still gets updates, there’s no mandatory rush.

You have the freedom to choose when and which updates to install. Stick with the version you like without feeling pressured to constantly upgrade.

10. Picking a distro from the bucket

In Linux, there are many options to choose from, which can be confusing for beginners. However, it’s a world where you can select based on your needs.

For example, for penetration testing and hacking, there are distributions like Kali, Parrot, and Back Arch. Each has its own advantage. Linux gives you the freedom to choose what suits you best.

11. Linux: Ideal Choice for Servers

Contrary to popular belief, Linux is highly recognized and widely used. In fact, it powers all of the world’s top 500 supercomputers. Plus, the majority of websites you visit are hosted on Linux-based servers. Nearly 96.3% of the top one million web servers run on Linux.

You might be unaware of what a Linux administrator does and the opportunities it offers. The reality is, Linux administrators have vast prospects in server management and a continuously expanding career path.

Linux: A Few Drawbacks for beginners

Certainly, Linux isn’t without its disadvantages. While I highlight its strengths, it’s important to acknowledge the few drawbacks it does have.

  • Certain applications need terminal commands, not a visual interface (GUI).
  • Installation challenges depend on your chosen distros.
  • Finding specific applications can be challenging until you gain experience.
  • Community support is your main source of help.
  • Not all proprietary software is compatible with Linux (You might miss your windows/Mac favorite software).

Discover Linux: A Perspective for Microsoft Users

If you are bored Microsoft user? If you find Microsoft and Mac a bit dull, why not give Linux a try?

My recommendation is to start with Linux in a Virtual Box. It’s a simple way to dive in. Trust me, once you experience Linux, your curiosity will soar. I speak from my own experience. Slowly transitioning to Linux is the smartest choice when shifting your OS.

Choosing a right Linux distro

Choosing a Linux distribution differs from selecting other operating systems like Windows or macOS due to the vast array of options available.

Each Linux distribution has its own unique features and strengths, making it essential to align your choice with your specific needs and preferences.

Based on our personal experience and exploration of various distros, here are some top recommendations:

  1. Debian and its derivatives (such as Linux Mint (LMDE) and Ubuntu): Known for stability and reliability, Debian-based distros are a favorite among I and many users.
  2. Pop!_OS: Developed by System76, Pop!_OS offers a user-friendly experience with a focus on performance and productivity.
  3. Arch Linux: Ideal for users who prefer customization and control, but it may not be suitable for beginners due to its complex initial setup process.
  4. Fedora: Backed by Red Hat, Fedora is a cutting-edge distro known for its commitment to open source software and innovation.

Ultimately, the best Linux distribution for you depends on your individual requirements and preferences. It’s worth experimenting with different distros to find the one that best fits your needs.

Instead of relying solely on my recommendations, it’s important to explore and select the Linux distribution that best suits your needs and preferences.

Final thoughts

Linux can be suitable for small to large-scale business set-ups for sure. The above points prove that the enterprise can grow financially and also technically stronger through Linux, which can adapt to any kind of organizationโ€™s needs.
