While some of these tools may already be familiar to some, there are still many who hesitate to give them a try due to misconceptions about open source software.
Contrary to popular belief, these tools are not limited to Linux distributions; in fact, nearly all of of open-source solutions are compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems.
By utilizing open-source tools, businesses can access a wide range of powerful software without the burden of licensing fees.
Throughout this blog, I will introduce some of the most valuable open-source tools available for businesses, tested and using in our daily drivers.

Okular – A Universal Cross-Platform Document Viewer. Okular operates seamlessly across all platforms and serves as an excellent alternative to Adobe Acrobat Reader.
It can process all types of documents and excels in PDF handling, offering features like highlighting, annotating, first-class signature support, and separate content views.
It can effortlessly handle and process various file types including PDF, PS, TIFF, CHM, DjVu, images, DVI, XPS, ODT, Fiction Book, Comic Book, Plucker, EPub, Fax, and Mobipocket.
4. Odoo
Odoo is a comprehensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, and the best part is that it is open-source.
It is designed to adapt to an organization’s evolving needs and is considered competitive in the market. While it may not be the absolute best, it certainly holds its own.
Pros:
- Availability of both free and paid versions.
- Option to self-host the software.
- Competitive brand in the market.
- User-friendly and easy to use.
- Offers good pricing.
Cons:
- UI may not be the most visually appealing.
- Support quality is often lacking.
If you prefer a proprietary solution with an even lower price, then HubSpot is an excellent choice, as it comes with good customer support.
4. Accounting
When it comes to accounting, it is a crucial aspect for all businesses, but there are a few options available in open-source: GnuCash and Ledger-CL
1. GnuCash:
If you run a small to medium-scale business, GnuCash is the right choice. It is a simple yet effective tool with plenty of features. It is particularly powerful for double-entry booking and offers command and integration capabilities.
Pros:
- Free of cost.
- Graphs reporting for better visualization.
- Availability of a mobile app.
- Simplicity: GnuCash focuses on essential features aligned with basic accounting principles.
- Pre-available inbuilt templates for convenience.
- Runs on all Unix platforms, Windows, and macOS.
Cons:
- Not cloud-based, so it lacks online accessibility.
- No live customer service support.
- Limited functionality compared to more advanced accounting software.
2. Ledger-CLI:
Ledger-CLI is a tool written in C++ and is suitable for any type of business, from small to large-scale operations. It is entirely free and open source, making it accessible to everyone.
Pros:
- Very simple and straightforward tool.

- Ensures accurate accounting.
Cons:

- Requires building everything from your end, but it is not a complex task.

Notably, GnuPG is an open implementation of “openPGP” (PGP – Preety Good Privacy) serves as a viable alternative to Symantec’s PGP cryptographic software suite, providing similar functionality while remaining open-source and freely accessible.

If you’re in search of an alternative to GPT that’s locally hosted, Ollama emerges as a compelling choice. Unlike GPT, which is a proprietary tool, Ollama is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).
As of November 16, 2023, it is still under development for Windows but is readily available for Linux and MAC. Ollama stands out as a rapidly growing open-source community, offering a decentralized model that runs directly from your local machine.
To utilize Ollama, you can choose from a variety of models tailored to your specific use case. This decentralized approach provides users with flexibility and control, making it a noteworthy option in the landscape of language models.
By leveraging Ollama, you can perform a wide range of activities comparable to what GPT offers. This includes tasks such as coding, summarization, inquiries, and more.
Please remember: To run the 3B models, make sure you have a minimum of 8 GB of RAM. For the 7B models, you’ll need 16 GB, and for the 13B models, you should have 32 GB.
In the provided screenshot, you can see a selection of language models, just a glimpse of the various options available for you to choose from based on your specific use case.
8. ClamAV
ClamAV is an open-source anti-malware and virus scanning tool that also performs signature testing. It is effective with:
- Virus signatures and is suitable for all environments.
- The software is compatible with the three major operating systems: Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- ClamAV is a comprehensive tool that integrates Freshclam, Sigtool, and clamBC.
- Excels in detecting phishing attacks that may appear suspicious through HTML codes displayed in URLs.
There are numerous advantages to using ClamAV, and it is available free of charge. If your organization is already investing heavily in expensive anti-malware solutions, I recommend considering ClamAV as an additional security measure.
9. KeepassXC
KeePassXC is written in C++ and is an open-source tool. We highly recommend it as the first password manager focused on privacy. Hosting all your passwords and keys yourself adds an extra layer of security. It offers all the features that paid and proprietary software provides, but at no cost.
Pros:
- You own your data, meaning your passwords.
- Completely local storage and operation.
- Browser integration.
- Auto-fill feature.
- TOTP (Time-Based One-Time Password) support.
- Passkeys.
- Analysis of password exposure.
- Keyshare.
Cons:
While most other software options operate at least partially on their own cloud, like Bitwarden (an another open-source platform) which you can self-host, KeePassXC lacks this feature.
However, this can also be seen as its strength. If you require synchronization across all devices, that would be my next recommendation.
Compared to this single drawback, I don’t see it as a significant con. Considering its pro features, it is definitely worth it.
10. Syncthing
Syncthing is a platform that operates directly from your local machines, typically accessed through the local host at http://127.0.0.1:8384/ for all devices.
This eliminates concerns about interruptions during synchronization. It seamlessly facilitates real-time syncing across multiple devices.
You can create multiple folders with specific syncing enabled and easily disable particular sync tasks. It prioritizes privacy with encrypted synchronization. What more could you need?
